Following its release, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has certainly stirred the pot. Perhaps the loudest criticism revolves around the ever-growing lineup of flamboyant skins that the game offers.
Critics argue that these extravagant skins detract from the game’s realism—a fair point. However, not all players are upset by this shift. There’s clearly a segment of the Call of Duty community that enjoys these outlandish looks, as their popularity fuels their continued release. While they may not appeal to everyone, they’re evidently popular enough that Treyarch continues to embrace weird skins. Miles Leslie, the Associate Creative Director at Treyarch, pointed out that these skins offer the team greater creative freedom. So, with Black Ops 6 committed to its path of quirky aesthetics, the question arises: Is it time for Marvel to join the fray?
Marvel’s presence in Call of Duty isn’t just a wild dream for the fans. Imagine the brand, one of the colossal giants in pop culture, pairing with Black Ops. It seems like a collaboration that could really set off fireworks. As Black Ops 6 ramps up its over-the-top content, Activision and Treyarch should definitely consider which major franchises could next make their entrance. Against this backdrop, a Marvel crossover seems less radical than it might have otherwise, signaling perhaps the ideal moment for such a collaboration.
Looking at some of the wackiest skins in Black Ops 6, like the ‘Raccoon Goon’ or ‘Astro Chicken,’ and even stranger ones, a Marvel tie-in doesn’t seem so far-fetched. Furthermore, Treyarch’s recent crossover with Squid Game shows they aren’t afraid to think big. Although Squid Game is popular, it doesn’t quite match the sheer global dominance of Marvel. This direction surely indicates Treyarch’s willingness to bring high-profile properties into the mix.
In fact, pairing Call of Duty with Marvel could be monumental for both entities. With Call of Duty’s massive audience and Marvel’s sprawling empire of superheroes, the synergy could dramatically expand the player base and attract Marvel aficionados who’ve not yet dipped their toes into the world of Call of Duty. The game has also delved into crossovers before, and characters such as Captain America from the World War II era or The Punisher, seem tailor-made for Call of Duty’s battlegrounds.
Yet, Marvel’s own endeavors, like its online multiplayer venture Marvel Rivals, might make crossovers less straightforward. As Marvel continues to stir excitement with its own gaming projects, it may steer away from alliances like with Call of Duty for now, but, you never know. These partnerships are lucrative, and fans are eager. Although leaks about Wolverine and Deadpool making their way to Black Ops 6 turned out to be false, the appetite for such crossovers remains.
The debate about the role of fanciful skins in Call of Duty will persist. Regardless, there’s no denying that Black Ops 6 is managing to strike a balance between grounded military action and bombastic, fantastical elements, much to the delight of many. While some decisions may spark controversy, the game’s collaborative efforts continue to capture players’ imaginations.
