Apple Expected to Unveil “Feature-Rich” visionOS 3.0 Update at June’s WWDC

Apple has an exciting update on the horizon with the upcoming release of visionOS 3.0, according to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg. It appears that Apple’s focus for this year’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) will be on enhancing Vision Pro’s operating system, rather than unveiling new XR hardware.

Despite its hefty $3,500 price tag and exclusive market position, Apple has been consistently rolling out software upgrades for Vision Pro since its launch in February 2024. The tech giant recently introduced a range of productivity advancements, such as the much-anticipated ultra-wide Mac Virtual Display and the complete set of Apple Intelligence features, all available in a developer preview.

Gurman now shares that Apple is preparing to spotlight visionOS 3.0 at the WWDC, which generally takes place in June. “It seems that the Vision Products Group at Apple is reallocating its efforts toward different device formats,” Gurman states. “However, abandoning Vision Pro isn’t an option given the substantial investment. The company is committed to delivering continuous updates to the visionOS, with the third version promising an impressive array of features.”

While specific details of what visionOS 3.0 will bring remain under wraps, if earlier updates like visionOS 2.0 are any indication, developers can expect to dive into the new features right after the announcement. While information is still scarce, one area of improvement could be the inclusion of motion controllers. Gurman indicated last month that Apple is collaborating with Sony to officially incorporate PSVR 2’s Sense Controllers for the Vision Pro.

Regarding any new hardware announcements—or the absence of them—at WWDC 2025, Gurman reiterates previous insights from Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple supply chain analyst. Kuo had noted towards the end of last year that Apple has plans for several Vision Pro successors. Gurman adds that Apple is contemplating a headset with a new M-series chip, possibly the M5, alongside more affordable headset variations. Contrary to Kuo’s earlier suggestion of a 2025 release for an M5-upgraded Vision Pro, Gurman believes we won’t be seeing a new headset from Apple until after 2025.
