Wow, just diving right into this VR rabbit hole, huh? So, apparently, the brainiacs over at Meta’s Reality Labs are cooking up some wild headsets for the upcoming ACM SIGGRAPH 2025 shindig. And, not gonna lie, they sound pretty wild.
Okay, so there are these two headsets they’re raving about. One is straight-up VR — they’re squeezing a massive 180-degree view into these things. Like, compare that with the Quest 3’s 100 degrees and it’s like going from a peep-hole to panorama. They’re using “high-curvature reflective polarizers” — whatever that means. Wish I could explain, but I’m not a scientist, ha!
Snap back to reality (oops, was that an Eminem lyric?) — there’s also an MR (Mixed Reality, I guess) headset. It’s got these four cameras making sure you don’t miss a thing. Imagine checking your lap for snacks without missing any action. Hilarious, right?
And just a sidebar here: I used to think my phone’s camera was fancy until I heard these cameras boast 80MP at 60 FPS. Mind. Blown.
They even did this showdown with the Quest 3. Kinda like a VR cage fight, but techy. With the MR headset, you could spot every single potato chip in existence. Well, not really, but you get what I’m saying.
Oh, another quirky tidbit — they’re using some old-school tracking tech called ‘Constellation.’ Makes you wonder why old stuff gets recycled. Easier to tweak maybe? The thought makes my brain twitch a bit.
If you’re wondering if Pimax or others compare, these Meta gizmos allegedly stay sleek while others get bulky. Fancy tech slimming down is a paradox I’ll never get past.
But, hold your horses if you think you’ll be wearing these next-gen babies soon. Meta’s got this habit of showing off cool stuff that just… never lands. Remember that varifocal headset from 2018? Yeah, still MIA.
And apparently, Meta’s decision-makers, like Andrew ‘Boz’ Bosworth, are still iffy about whether the pros of a wider FOV actually outweigh the cons, like device weight or cost. Classic case of too many chefs in the kitchen, maybe?
Anyway, that’s it. Or wait, was there more? Oh well, this stuff is making my head spin.
