Well, here’s something interesting I stumbled across. Apparently, Chris Avellone, who’s been around the block a few times in the game industry, found a new gig. He’s now with Republic Games. Saw this pop up on LinkedIn — you know how those notifications are, popping up just when you’re about to write something really clever in a comment and then it’s gone. Anyway, it was Adam Williams, the head honcho over there, who shared the update. And he seemed pretty jazzed about it.
Williams was all, “Chris was front and center during the whole RPG golden age thing.” Which makes sense if you’ve played any decent RPGs. The ones that actually make you pause and go, “Wait, did that just happen?” Apparently, Republic Games has got something cooking — an RPG, no less, with twists and turns like a summer beach novel, but probably less sand. Imagine the kind of plot where each choice spirals into a different ending. Now that’s some serious replay value, right? Not that I have time to replay anything, with my ever-growing list of things to do that I pretend are higher priority.
Williams also dropped that they’re rolling with a dark fantasy vibe. Which sounds exactly like my kinda Friday night game session — if my pizza doesn’t arrive cold, that is. Oh, and they’re forming what he calls a “dream team,” which sounds more like marketing speak, but hey, sometimes clichés are clichés for a reason. It gets people pumped. Who doesn’t like a good underdog team story?
Now, not everything’s all roses and epic boss fights. Chris got tangled up in some allegations back in 2020, and let’s just say it’s one of those situations where the more you read, the less you know what to think. He denies it, but it’s one of those messy real-life plotlines you wish only happened in fiction.
Anyway — wait, no, uh, where was I? Right, so that’s the scoop over at Republic Games. Looking forward to seeing where they take this crazy tale. Might just be worth keeping an eye on.
