Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has undeniably captured the hearts of fans, surpassing the box office performance of the second film.
It’s becoming increasingly evident that the Sonic movie universe is here to stay. Even before the third installment hit theaters, a fourth movie was slated for release in 2027. This franchise is clearly thriving, with the three films together having already pulled in a whopping $1 billion at the box office this month. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 even earned the distinction of being the second highest-grossing video game movie in the United States, trailing just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Now, as Variety reports, Sonic 3 has set another benchmark, this time within its own series.
Just this past weekend, Sonic 3 reached a staggering global box office total of $420 million, making it the most successful film among the trio released thus far. The second film previously held this record with $405 million, a figure that’s impressive in its own right. Paramount must be thrilled to see growth in these numbers, even if the increase is modest (although some might say $20 million is anything but marginal). Typically, you’d expect some decline at this point, if any were to occur.
It’s hard to deny that Shadow’s inclusion likely drew more viewers, given his status as a fan favorite. However, the question now is whether the fourth movie will manage to match this success. The post-credits scene hints at the introduction of another beloved character, one I’m particularly excited about. Only time will tell if our speedy blue friend can maintain this momentum.
