Valve is gearing up to release a stylish new version of its handheld console, the Steam Deck, now dressed in a sleek white color. Announced on Monday, this variant is not just about the looks but will come at a slightly higher price.
The Steam Deck OLED: Limited Edition White is set to hit stores on November 18 at 6 p.m. EST / 3 p.m. PST. Gamers in regions where the console is currently available will find it, and for those in Australia, it arrives on November 19 at 10 a.m. AEST, coinciding with the console’s much-anticipated debut in the country.
If you already own a Steam Deck, there might not be much incentive to switch to the white model. In terms of specifications, the Steam Deck OLED: Limited Edition White mirrors the 1TB variant of the Steam Deck OLED. Both boast a 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display, a refresh rate of up to 90Hz, and can power through gaming sessions ranging from three to twelve hours.
So, what’s the real difference? It’s primarily cosmetic. The white model sports a chic white and grey palette. Plus, it comes with a matching white carry case and a white microfiber cloth to keep everything looking pristine, contrasting with the standard black accessories.
Price-wise, the Limited Edition White ticks up slightly higher than its black counterpart. While the usual black 1TB Steam Deck is priced at $649, going for this distinguished white version will set you back $679, making it a $30 premium for the aesthetic upgrade.
The white Steam Deck will be released in limited quantities across various regions, allowing only one purchase per Steam account. Details on how many units are available are scarce, but Valve has made it clear they won’t replenish stock once it’s sold out.
As explained by Valve, “Once we are sold out, we will be sold out.”
Now, how do you snag one of these white beauties? You can’t just add it to your Amazon basket. Instead, this product is exclusive to the Steam store (except in select Asian areas where it’ll be available via Komodo). However, there’s a catch: If you haven’t spent at least $5 USD in the Steam store before this month, you’re out of luck. Valve uses this rule to ward off potential spam and malicious users.
Additionally, only those with accounts in “good standing” can purchase a Steam Deck. Valve isn’t interested in selling to users who indulge in cheat programs. To check your status, open the Steam app on your PC, navigate to “Steam,” click “Settings,” and then the “Learn More” button beside “VAC status.” This will indicate if your account meets the necessary criteria.
These restrictions also apply if you’re eyeing the standard black Steam Deck. However, there’s been ample time to meet the purchase requirements. Unlike the white variant, the black model remains available with no limitations on when you can purchase it.
Gaming enthusiasts, here’s a chance to get your hands on this exclusive console—just be ready to act fast!
