Okay, so here’s the thing. HP, right? They said last year they’d be the first to bring out some hardware with this cool thing called Google Beam (what they used to call Project Starline, not sure why they changed the name—maybe they just got bored or something). Anyway, now they’ve introduced something called ‘Dimension’ and it’s like, $25,000. Yeah, I know.
So, Dimension is supposed to be this wild, futuristic thing with six cameras. Apparently, it uses some fancy AI magic to make a super realistic 3D video of the people using it. This all shows up on a big 65-inch screen that, somehow, makes you look like you’re really there, with all the eye contact and depth and stuff. I can’t even imagine how it works, but it sounds kind of mind-blowing, honestly.
Oh, here’s a kicker—this price tag doesn’t even include the Google Beam license. Are you kidding me? Seems weird, but I guess that’s how they roll.
They want enterprises to buy it, of course, and it works with Zoom Rooms and Google Meet for the whole 3D chat thing. It’s also compatible with the usual suspects like Teams and Webex. So, you can have your meetings in 3D or just stick to 2D. Whatever floats your boat.
Helen Sheirbon, from HP, said something along the lines of how this helps people really connect (which is cool, if you ask me). She went on about bridging the virtual and physical world or something like that. It’s all a bit over my head, but sounds pretty impressive.
Google Beam first hit the scene in 2021, back when it was called Project Starlight. Basically, it lets you see things in 3D without wearing any headgear. Just like, talk to someone and it feels like they’re there. Wild, right?
HP did some testing and found Beam made people notice more non-verbal cues and even helped with memory and turn-taking in chats. Sounds like they’ve cracked some secret code about human communication or something. Who knew?
