Oh man, since that Steam Deck hit the shelves, the mod scene’s been like a freakin’ carnival. Frankenstein creations everywhere. Have you seen the “Steam Brick”? That’s not even the wildest. Michaelthatsit on Reddit, whoever that genius is — or madman, depends on how you see it — decided to gut the thing and throw its insides into a keyboard. He calls it the Bento. Yeah, Bento, like the lunchbox. I guess it’s kinda like a portable gaming buffet, right?
So, Michael’s got this Steam Deck, right? And he’s like, why not slap a keyboard on it and call it a day? He’s got pics up on Reddit — and get this — he hooks it up to these funky display glasses using some Type-C magic. Who’s even thought of wearing their screen on their face? Why not, I guess.
The dude went deep on this. He yanked out the guts of the Steam Deck, laid them all out, and crafted this custom 3D-printed chassis. Imagine cramming all that tech underneath an Apple Magic keyboard. You’d think it wouldn’t fit, but it does. Barely, I bet. Oh, and there’s like two parts to this setup: left side’s got the meat — the battery, motherboard, yadda yadda. And the right? A little extra cubby. Who knows why?
Apparently, Michael stuffed a Type-C hub in there. Nice touch. The whole 3D thing’s a bit of a hack job since he had to split it into two because, well, 3D printers aren’t exactly size-friendly. Also, no mouse. Yep, you’re just pounding keys unless you plug in something else.
He’s calling this the first version. Could probably use some polish, but whatever, it’s working. Plans to make it one piece and maybe slap on a mouse? Sounds smart to me.
In a strange way, Michael’s project kinda shows off how insane the Steam Deck is. I mean, for folks who drool over turning it into a mini desktop monster, this is their jam. So, yeah, whether you wanna game while wearing glasses or need a good old-fashioned keyboard brawl, Bento’s got you. Crazy world, huh?
